Quartz Countertop Guide: Costs, Design, Maintenance, and More

Kitchen Remodeling  ·  7 min read

Quartz is the most popular countertop material in Houston kitchen remodels right now, and it's not hard to understand why. It looks great, requires minimal maintenance, and holds up to real kitchen use. But "quartz" covers a wide range of products at very different price and quality levels. Here's what you actually need to know.

What Is Quartz (Engineered Stone)?

Quartz countertops are engineered stone — not quarried natural stone. They're made from approximately 90–93% crushed quartz bound with polymer resin and pigments. The manufacturing process produces a consistent, non-porous surface that doesn't require sealing and resists staining far better than granite or marble.

Because it's engineered, quartz is available in an enormous range of colors and patterns — from solid whites and grays to convincing marble-look designs. The best modern quartz products are genuinely difficult to distinguish from natural stone at normal viewing distance.

Brands and What They're Worth

Cambria

The only major quartz brand manufactured entirely in the U.S. (Minnesota). Cambria is known for thick slabs (1.25" standard), exceptional edge-to-edge color consistency, and a lifetime warranty. Their veined marble-look designs are among the best in the category. Premium price — expect to pay toward the top of the range — but the product justifies it.

Silestone (Cosentino)

One of the original major quartz brands, still highly regarded. Good color and pattern selection. Cosentino's latest technology incorporates recycled content without compromising performance.

Caesarstone

Israeli-manufactured, widely distributed in the Houston market. Consistent quality, strong color selection, competitive pricing in the mid range of the quartz category.

MSI / Vicostone

Budget-friendly quartz options that perform well. Good for projects where aesthetics matter but budget is the constraint. Not at the same level as Cambria or Silestone, but a significant step up from builder-grade product.

Quartz Countertop Costs in Houston

Installed quartz countertop costs in Houston typically range from $55 to $120 per square foot, including fabrication and installation. The range reflects material selection (entry-level vs. Cambria), edge profile choices (standard eased edge vs. mitered waterfall), cutout complexity (undermount sinks, cooktop cutouts), and the size of the job.

For a typical Houston kitchen with 40–60 square feet of counter space, expect a total of $2,500–$7,000 in materials and $2,000–$3,500 in fabrication and installation — roughly $5,000–$10,500 total for the countertops alone.

Maintenance

Quartz requires no sealing. Clean with mild dish soap and water — avoid harsh chemicals, especially bleach, which can damage the resin binder over time. Use trivets for hot pots and pans; the resin in quartz can discolor with sustained heat exposure. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on polished surfaces.

One thing quartz cannot replicate is the depth and movement of a natural stone slab. If that visual quality is what you're after, quartzite or granite may be the better choice. For everything else — durability, consistency, low maintenance — quartz is hard to beat.
