Incorporate High-End Appliances Into Your Kitchen Remodel

Kitchen Remodeling  ·  6 min read

High-end appliances are one of the areas where homeowners most often either overspend on the wrong things or underspend on the things that actually matter. Here's a practical guide to integrating premium appliances into your kitchen remodel intelligently.

Choose Your Appliances Before You Design the Kitchen

This is the most important piece of advice in this article: select your appliances before your cabinet layout is finalized. Appliances dictate cutout sizes, electrical requirements, gas connection locations, and ventilation needs. Trying to fit a 48" range into a kitchen designed around a 36" range means rebuilding cabinets — an expensive mistake that's entirely avoidable.

Get spec sheets for every appliance you're considering and give them to your contractor before the design is locked. We require this on every project.

Ventilation: The Most Overlooked Requirement

High-performance ranges — especially dual-fuel and professional gas ranges — generate significantly more heat and combustion byproducts than standard residential ranges. A range hood sized for a standard 30" range will be inadequate for a 48" professional range.

The standard calculation is 100 CFM per 10,000 BTUs from your cooking equipment. A professional range with 60,000 total BTUs needs a 600 CFM hood at minimum — and the hood needs to be properly ducted to the exterior, not recirculating. In Houston's tightly built homes, getting a duct run to the exterior sometimes requires creative routing — plan for it early.

Brands Worth the Premium

Ranges & Cooktops

Wolf and Thermador are the dominant professional-grade brands in Houston's high-end market. Both offer dual-fuel ranges (gas cooktop, electric oven) that professional chefs prefer. La Cornue sits at the top of the price range for clients who want a statement piece. For clients who want quality without the highest price, BlueStar and Bertazzoni are worth evaluating.

Refrigerators

Sub-Zero remains the benchmark for built-in refrigeration in Houston luxury kitchens. Their column refrigerators allow for fully integrated panel-ready installations that disappear into the cabinetry. Thermador and Miele offer competitive alternatives at slightly lower price points.

Dishwashers

Miele makes the best dishwashers available in the U.S. market — quieter, more efficient, and longer-lasting than any competitor. For clients investing in a full premium kitchen, a Miele dishwasher is one of the highest-value upgrades available.

Lead Times: Order Early

This cannot be overstated. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador appliances frequently have 8–14 week lead times from order to delivery. In periods of high demand, that can stretch further. Order your appliances the day your selections are finalized — not the day demo starts. Late appliance delivery is one of the most common causes of project schedule delays we see.

What's Actually Worth the Premium

Based on what we see in Houston kitchens: the range and refrigerator are where premium investment pays off most in daily use and longevity. The dishwasher is worth upgrading to Miele. The microwave drawer — often a Wolf or Sharp — is functional but the brand matters less. Range hood quality matters for performance and noise level; don't buy a budget hood to put over a professional range.

A $15,000 Sub-Zero refrigerator in a kitchen with budget cabinets and basic countertops will feel out of place. Build the whole kitchen to a consistent level of quality — don't spike on one element while cutting corners on others.
